In 1974, the late, great Stephen King published his first novel, Carrie, which launched him into national prominence as one of America's great horror writers. King's haunting tale of telekinesis, inherited guilt and telepathic babysitting hasn't grown too dated. The original version was a minor sensation, but the film in 1988 was a bonafide cinematic classic that launched a new generation of creepy teen movie heroines and renewed interest in telepathy.
The first in a quartet of novels, The Monkey's Paw is an odd story about wish-granting mythical talismans. In this case, the talisman is a wooden monkey's paw, or hand, that grants four wishes once it's picked up. When one young boy, Harry, receives the paw, he's unaware that the curse is active until it's too late. The story is less about the curse than about the boy's insatiable desire for his mother's love and the lengths he goes to in order to win it. A classic horror read for a modern generation of readers.
Alternately titled The Monkey's Paw, this story from the British author of Gothic and horror classics such as Island and The Woman in Black is a tale of woe that needs little embellishment. In 1855, a young girl is murdered and her bloody hand is left at the scene. The story is framed as the memoirs of one of the very people who discovered the body - a man named John Hanbury - and a letter from his late wife. The hand is put up for sale, and it's purchased by a group of ill-fated lovers who will be cursed by the powerful magic of the beast within the paw. This one's a bit of a slow burn, but it's worth the time.

A morbidly funny, dramatic love story between a man and a woman's body — and this is the best way to describe the plot of this bizarre, weird and hilarious zombie drama. When a man's brain is transplanted into the body of a woman, how will he act? How will he react to the woman's new body? It's a tale of love, lust and, eventually, the inevitable death of both lovers. It's a truly extraordinary movie. And it's the only comedy zombie movie in the world.
